How to setup Mikrotik Router
To begin configuring your router, start by downloading the Winbox software. Once installed, launch Winbox and use “admin” as both the username and password to log in. By default, the router’s IP address is set to 192.168.88.1.
Before proceeding, ensure not to reset the settings to blank.
Next, navigate to “System” -> “Clock” -> “Set Time” to synchronize the router’s clock.
Then, head to “System” -> “Identity” to change the router’s name to your preference.
To keep your router up to date, go to “System” -> “Packages” and check for any available updates. If updates are found, proceed with the installation.
If needed, you can reset the router’s configurations by going to “System” -> “Reset Configurations” -> “Reset”. However, exercise caution as this will revert settings to their default state.
In case you encounter disconnection issues and the router is not visible in Winbox, assign your computer a static IP of 192.168.88.1. This might help the router to reappear in the Winbox list.
For security purposes, navigate to “System” -> “User” -> “Edit User” and change the default empty password. This adds an extra layer of protection to your router.
Now, connect the WAN cable to ether5 port and the LAN cable to ether1. In the Winbox interface, head to “Interfaces”, select ether5, and rename it to “Wan Internet” for clarity.
Finally, ensure your router is set up to assign dynamic IP addresses by configuring the appropriate settings in the “Setup Router” section. This enables your router to dynamically allocate IP addresses to devices connected to the network.
By following these steps, you can effectively configure your router using Winbox, ensuring optimal performance and security for your network.
